Intro to 3 Note Piano Chords for Beginners

November 5th, 2010

Beginners are often intimidated by chords on the piano, when in fact they’re nothing more then several keys being played at once. The tough part is knowing which keys to play. In this article I’ll introduce you to 3 note chords and how to easily discover the right notes to play.

3 Note Chords

Basic piano chords are 3 notes all taken from the same scale. So in order to begin learning piano chords you will want to be familiar with the scales for the given chord you want to play.

Example: To play a C chord you should be familiar with the C major scale.

First Third and Fifth

A 3 note chord is made up of the 1st, 3rd and 5th notes from a given scale. So if you want to play a C major chord you would look at the C major scale and pick out the first, third and fifth notes from that scale and play them all at the same time.

C major scale: C    D    E    F    G    A    B

The name of a chord is designated by it’s root note which is also the first note. So for the C chord the first note is the C note and that is also known as the root.

By first looking at the scale for the chord you want to play, then knowing where those notes are on the piano you can formulate any 3 note chord. A trick is you only really need to know the location of the first note and then move up from the first to the 3rd and 5th.

Three Fingers

Use your Thumb for the first note, your middle finger for the third note and your pinky finger for the fifth note. This is the proper technique for playing 3 note chords.

Learn your Scales

If you haven’t realized it already your scales are the key to understanding how to create piano chords. So if you haven’t been start practicing your scale. It’s not the most fun but it will speed up your learning of different piano chords.

A jazz piano chord is much the same as any other piano chord. This means that when you learn the basics of piano chords and theory, you’ll be able to play any type of music, be it gospel or jazz. Many people enjoy the jazz style of music and will benefit from learning those chords that are most often used in jazz music. Once you learn these chords, you’ll be able to play a wide variety of music because you will understand the backbone of notes and scales that are the key to playing music on any instrument.

Any pianist who wants to learn how to play jazz needs to have charts they can reference frequently. You’ll first learn the basic intervals and how chords are built. You’ll also learn how these chords are used differently in each song you play. Once you have mastered the basic intervals of jazz chords, you’ll then be able to move on to advanced chords such as 9ths, 11ths, 13ths, drop voicings, and blues chords.

An online piano course will teach you all the functions of chords including clusters, polytonal clusters, and substitutions. You’ll be provided with numerous charts that you can use for help during practice or when you need to quickly reference a certain jazz piano chord. When you learn to play these jazz chords, you’ll also learn how to play with more harmony, variety, and passion.

Learning online is a great option when you’re starting out on the piano. You can learn at your own pace without having to plan around the schedule of a piano teacher. Online lessons also challenge you at your own playing level. This means that when it’s time to learn those jazz chords, you master one before moving on to the next.

The Best Learning Guide How to Play Piano – Rocket Piano Must Be Your Best Bet!

October 18th, 2010

The way about learning to play piano by ear, when you first start out, is that it will take a while and you will need to be patient. When I first started out it took me quite some time and I had to work through quite a lot of frustrating moments but finally it was much more rewarding. Actually learning piano will be a lot of fun. There are some things about the physical connection between hand, ear, eye, and brain involved in learning to play piano which stimulates learning in general.

What reason is there for learning to play piano you might ask? Keeping the mind in shape is certainly one reason. Learning how to play piano by ear first though will refine your listening skills and eventually make reading sheet music a lot easier. Learning how to play can be a great joy for many reasons. Music can express an important part of us that can reach expression in no other way.

The one major advantage to piano playing over other instruments is that the piano is being played with more than one note. It means if you learn to play piano, you are able to accompany other instruments and even singers. For an example, when multiple notes are being played together, piano chords are achieved. The chords then come together to form a melody. Learning to identify notes will play a large part in your understanding of piano chords. As you move through your studies, you will learn all of the terminology associated with piano playing and the definition of each.

In an evening, someone who knows nothing about the piano might have the ability to play a melody just on chords alone. Playing by chords is usually encouraged more than playing by tablature. In the past experience, the focus should be on enjoying the experience and to savor the time that is available for playing and practice. Just get ready for some stinging stumbles though and some stress along the way, but please don’t be turned off by that. Please take pride in small accomplishments and recognize little improvements along the way. Learning to play the piano is a lifelong process.

One of the best ways to get started and learn to play piano in my opinion is an online piano course called “Rocket Piano” created by Ruth Searle. He is classically trained to Grade 8 in Solo Piano and has more than 15 years experience playing. While Classical piano is her specialty, she also has extensive experience playing and performing Jazz, Pop, Blues, Rock, and Gospel. She spent three years studying music and graduated with a Bachelor of Media Arts majoring in Commercial Music, also received an Australasian Award for Composition.

Rocket Piano is jam-packed with quality information, including hundreds of sound files, pictures, diagrams, videos lessons AND step-by-step instructions training you to read music AND play by ear, so you can play virtually any song that you hear – this is truly cutting-edge material! With Rocket Piano you’ll discover how to read music, how to improvise, how to play Pop, Jazz, Blues and Gospel, and how to play with the magic and “feel” of a professional. It is designed to be the easiest system to learn to play piano available anywhere.

Rocket Piano will guide you through the basics you need to know in order to play by ear, including what chords you need to know, developing your playing technique, notes, difficult chords and more.

Rocket Piano is the only educational program in the world that can teach even a 2 year old child to play piano with both hands and read music notes. This piano learning online course is useful for a beginner as well as an advanced student to develop the skills of fluent music reading and immaculate piano playing. This will help you over time, to identify the notes, intervals and patterns of the chords being played. It may be a little tough in the beginning, but you will become proficient at it soon.

How to Play Piano and Write Music

October 9th, 2010

You are neither too young nor too old to play piano and compose. If you think otherwise, get that fairy tale out of your head.

A few geniuses began at age 3 and burned out in middle age. Gustave Mahler, a modern symphonic artist and Jazz Guitarist legend Wes Montgomery didn’t start serious composing until they were well in their 30′s. Verdi was still going strong at 87. Some of the great pop, jazz, and rock music of our time has been written by musicians who consider the age of 25 as “over the hill.”

Conclusion: forget about age.

What about music theory? Does it have anything to do with playing the piano and composing a piece of music?

Sounds come first. Theory books and systems tag along behind, explaining in words what you’ve already experienced by ear.

Composing is a “hot” creative act. Studying theory is a “cool” analytical act.

Theory explains what is going on in a piece of music. It shows us the machinery that makes the music tick. Training in theory helps sharpen our understanding, and helps the player and composer organize his or her musical materials.

Absorb theory for what it has to offer. But watch out for the trap of “rules.” In the early stages of playing piano and writing music, rules can be helpful disciplines to help focus our thinking. But given too much importance, rules become handcuffs; break them if you know what you’re doing.

Use your good ears to break through the endless blanket of sound that surrounds our lives.
Direct you hearing. Sharpen your perception. Isolate sounds. Listen, and make yourself aware of your sound-world.

A painting, a statue, and a building have a certain kind of life. All of their parts exist at the same time. But music is like a movie or a stage play: it unrolls slowly, bit by bit. A movie begins, continues, and ends before your eyes. Music does the same for your ears.

Your piano playing and compositions live and breathe.

Guidelines for Playing Piano By Ear to Write Music
Begin your sketches with a simple, basic idea: a sound you like, a group of pitches, an interesting harmony, and attractive rhythm pattern, an idea for lyrics, and so on.

Next step: think out a number of possibilities for developing, expanding, exploiting, and contrasting your basic idea.

For example:

1. A group of pitches can be played forward, backward, upsidedown, or with its order rearranged.

2. You can keep the overall shape of a pitch group (the way it moves up and down), but change it by opening up or tightening the distance (interval) from one note to the next.

3. The same pitch group can be varied by changing its speed, meter, or rhythm… or by changing its “color” through changes of instrumental register (high vs. low).

4. A rhythmic idea, no matter how simple, can be stretched, tightened up, fragmented, or transformed into a repeated figure

5. A rhythmic idea can be applied to differnet pitch groups, or used to give movement to your favorite chord progression.

6. A harmony can be intensified by adding “color” tones (7th, 9th, added 6th, suspended tones, etc.); or softened by subtracting chord tones; or given a refreshed sound by the way you voice the harmony on the piano.

Try to keep a relaxed attitude toward you study of piano, and an open mind about new ideas that almost always turn up while you’re experiementing with your sketches.

Above all, don’t lock yourself into one way of thinking. After a certain point, a piece may have its own ideas about the way it should deveop; don’t try to force it into a cookie mold!
Let it grow and breathe.

I am particularly a fan of DVD’s, since you can see and hear a lesson as many times as you want. It’s almost like having a private teacher by your side 24 hours a day. Piano course books are also great. Many piano course books are now accompanied by an audio CD which lets you listen to the lessons inside the book.

You might even attract enough of their interest that they will also want to learn! Give your children the gift of music.

4) Learning to play piano will give you the ability to perform your favorite songs anytime you feel like it! Everyone usually has a few songs in mind that they wished they could just sit down and play. Well, there is no better time than now to make that dream come true! Piano sheet music for all levels of difficulty is easily available at your local library, bookstore, or music store. There are even websites that sell printable electronic versions of sheet music online. The great thing about that is that some websites will even let you preview and hear samples of songs before you purchase!

7) Learning to play piano makes you a versatile musician. The piano is an extremely versatile instrument. The piano is the only instrument that allows you to play multiple notes simultaneously with great ease. This means that you can perform really nice renditions of songs from any genre. This also makes the piano an ideal instrument for composing since it basically acts as a miniature orchestra. If you are composing music on the computer, the electronic piano keyboard serves as a perfect interface for entering notes in real-time into your music software.

8) Learning to play piano will allow you to listen to music with greater enjoyment and appreciation. Since you will learn how songs are put together, your listening ability will become more refined. You will start to hear and notice more distinct details in the music that you listen to. Songs that you have been listening to for years will seem richer as you hear nuances that you have never noticed before. You may also start to enjoy songs from other genres of music that you would normally never listen to.

9) Learning to play piano is physically easy. The piano is much easier to pick up compared to other musical instruments. Take the violin for example, which takes some serious practice to be able to make even a single pleasing sound by using the bow. Another example would be the guitar. There are so many tough fingering positions that you will need to learn to be able to play even the most basic chords. By learning the piano, anyone can easily play notes and chords in their first lesson.

10) Learn to play piano and join a rich tradition that is over 250 years old. The piano has heavily influenced every major style of music since its first appearance. Today, pianists still use the piano keyboard to create great music, as heard by such performers like Gavin Degraw, Alicia Keys, and Vanessa Carlton. The piano is also being used behind the scenes as an instrument for composing music for movies, video games, plays, and much more.

There you have it! There are just so many great reasons to start playing the piano today. If you are even slightly convinced, I urge you to go ahead and give it a shot. It will be one of the best things you will ever do for yourself! You won’t regret it!

Learn to Play Piano Fast!

September 21st, 2010

If you’ve ever wanted to learn to play piano, you are in good company. Many people list “Learn to play the piano” on their New Year’s Resolution lists, or have it as a goal for their future. However, not many people take the steps necessary to learn how to play.

The sad part is that taking the time to learn to play piano has many advantages. In all actuality, with the right method, learning to play doesn’t take as much time as most people expect.

I believe that everyone can benefit from having some musical ability. The piano is one of the most versatile instruments. With a few simple lessons, you can learn to play:

Classical

Swing

Jazz

New Age

Rock/Pop

I can guarantee that you will never get bored playing the piano. There is always a new style to try, or a new song to master. Plus, sheet music is most likely available for your favorite songs, which makes the process even more fun.

Playing the piano is seen as a very intelligent skill, and with good reason. The skills you master when you learn to play piano will help increase your hand eye coordination and improve your left and right brain thinking. There is always something new to learn when you learn to play piano.

Just by learning a few songs on the piano, you’ll exercise your brain and gain a reputation as a semi-genius!

One of the fastest and most satisfying ways to learn to play piano is taking a chord-based approach. Most piano teachers will teach from a classical method. This includes those infamous scales, learning to read music, playing Fur Elise again and again…all the (boring) things we typically think of when we picture piano lessons.

The classical method does work, but it takes forever…which is why most teachers focus on this approach. Think about it. If you were a teacher, charging $40 an hour, would you go with a method that will take your students years to master? Or would you choose a method that has them improvising their own music and understanding musicianship within a few months?

I’d personally go with the option that will guarantee me long-term clients who will pay me $40 a week for years on end.

Learning to play by chords, however, is better for the students and not the teachers. If your goal is to learn to play piano, a chord-based approach to learning will give you more satisfaction, more quickly than the classical method. Your time-spent learning will be greatly reduced and, better yet, you’ll actually understand how music is created.

So find a teacher, or website, that focuses on chord-based teaching, and you’ll be able to finally reach your perpetual “learn to play piano” goal.

How To Play Piano Or Guitar By Ear

September 19th, 2010

Are you impressed with people who are able to play the piano, guitar or any musical instruments by ear? Do you think that these people are born with the talent to play music by ear? You know what? Play music by ear can be learnt. There are many methods to learn how to play piano or guitar by ear and in this article, we will explore one of these methods.

Are you able to recognize chords or scales without looking at music notations? Do you happen to know that the same chords are often repeated in most songs over and over again? If you do, then you are on your way to playing music by ear.

Playing by ear is not a matter of memorizing every chord and note in a song but by just being able to recognize the chord patterns of the song and being able to predict what chords or progressions will occur next. If you can do that, then you will be able to play by ear on any musical instruments.

Playing by ear is not a well kept secret nor is it a complicated process. On the contrary, the techniques and principles are simple and easy-to-understand. If you are a novice and is struggling to learn music theory, you will understand that the conventional method on learning how to play the piano or the guitar is a real challenge and will need to take years to master the musical instrument.

To put it candidly, learning, not to say mastering a musical instrument is not an easy task. It requires an intensive level of comprehension, application of the techniques and skill and most of all, a dogged determination.

Furthermore, it can never be really be mastered because there will always be something new to learn such as unused chord progression, unfamiliar music theory, or exploring different genres of music. So by learning how to play music by ear, you will then be able to cut through all the complexities in learning how to play the piano or the guitar in the conventional way.

The following are some simple techniques you must understand in order to play any song by ear. The first step in learning to play by ear is to learn how the melody is constructed. Especially so when learning how to play jazz piano or the lead guitar because of the solo runs involved. This is because when you know how the melody line is constructed, you will then be more able to predict where the notes of the melody are going to be.

For instance, if you know that a melody is being played in the key of say, G major, you will then first assess whether this melody sounds like it is created from a major, natural minor, melodic, minor, harmonic minor, blues, or any other scale that you can think of.

So by knowing all of these scales and being able to recognize the scales with your ear, you can then eliminate notes that are less likely to be a part of the melody in most cases.

After recognizing melodies from scales, you will be more experienced and will be able to immediately play any tune in your head!

For example, if you recognized that a song is played in G major, by knowing the notes of the G major scale, knowing what notes are most likely to be played and knowing what notes are not likely to be played, you will then be able to predict what notes will be played and what notes have already been played. It is just that simple.

By knowing what scale the songs are created from, by knowing what notes are immediately eliminated or less likely to occur in a melody or tune and by knowing what notes are most likely to be repeated, you can learn and play any song on the guitar or piano by ear. Of course, there are more to this if you want to be an accomplished play by ear musician.

The Talking Chord Chart
Announcing the birth of the first talking chord chart in the world. It not only shows in full color the most-used 96 piano chords, but it also talks you through each chord — major, minor, diminished, augmented, 6th, m6th, 7th, maj7th, plus inversions!

Top Ways To Sound Great Playing Piano

September 13th, 2010

Here are the top two ways to sound great playing the piano:

1) Develop and refine your piano technique.

No matter how advanced your playing develops, you’ll always benefit from returning to the basics. Returning to the basics in fact, is one of the top ways to sound great playing piano and it means practicing your scales, chords, sharps, flats, and all the other grunt work you learned as a beginner. You’ll want to be so skilled that you can repeat your lessons with your eyes closed! After you’ve mastered the basics, you’ll want to then practice playing the piano emotionally. There are several tools you can use to convey emotion in your performance, many of which manipulate volume and rhythm with range dynamics, legatos, slurs, staccatos, ties, transposes, and more.

These are some of the items you can develop and refine before you set out to play chords progressions and accompaniment. Quite often, learning pianists will rush into their lessons without taking the time to appreciate the details. As they say, the devil is in the details. So resist the temptation to skip lessons 4, 5, and 6 before you’ve even learned lesson 3! Lesson 7 after all, may introduce concepts that depend on knowledge gained from the lessons you might have “glossed over.”

2) Developing and refining your musical ear.

We know a fellow who likes to poke fun of speech and emphasize an important reality about our senses. He likes to tease people who say they have an ear for music or an eye for art. As always, this fellow’s response to such a phrase is, “Oh really? Well I have two! One on each side of my nose!” Although he’s a bit too literal for our tastes, he does make a good point. And that is to “see” clearly, or in our case, to “hear” clearly.

We suppose our friend is really saying, listen ‘twice’ as hard. At the same time that you listen to a great piece of music — and enjoy it — you’re also evaluating it . Even while you’re playing the piano yourself, you’re evaluating how faithfully you’re representing the song’s emotion and technical notation. To strengthen your listening skills however (or to listen with *both* of your ears as our friend would insist), you can record yourself playing the piano, and then evaluate the result. After enough practice, you’ll be able to do this without the aid of a tape recorder and make an immediate assessment the minute that you press a key.

Another way to strengthen your listening skills is to evaluate the music that moves you. While listening to the music of others, ask yourself what it is about that music that excites you. Then try to incorporate its characteristics into the music that you play (or at least, into your playing style). Of course you could do just the opposite as well. Evaluate what it is about music that bores you to death and then do everything you can to avoid it in your own music!

Just don’t make the mistake of believing that your opinion is the only one that matters. Seek out the opinions of others and ask for honest criticism. Don’t ask for just the sugarcoated stuff. Ask your friends and family to be a brutally honest as they care to be. Then use that criticism to improve your style.
